In this episode of the The Race Driver Coach Show, I tackle how you can get spotted in motorsport—something many of you aspiring racers struggle with, despite putting in the work. The truth is, results alone aren’t enough. You need to evaluate yourself honestly, consider how the industry sees you, and recognize the key areas where you might be falling short.
I’ll walk you through three crucial factors: delivering winning results, having a solid reputation and positive attitude, and understanding the power of political advantage. These three elements determine whether investors and teams see you as worthy of their support. If you’re serious about making it, you need to excel in all of these areas.
First, it's about results—no surprises there. You need more than just consistent top-five finishes; you need wins and podiums to make you stand out. Secondly, attitude and reputation are vital. If people in the paddock see you as difficult or unmotivated, it won't matter how fast you are—teams will look elsewhere. You need to ensure you are seen as a positive, hardworking brand ambassador. Finally, there's political advantage. If you’re from a country or have connections that help manufacturers break into markets, that can be a major asset.
Ultimately, these are the three things I, as a spotter, looked for when deciding who had the potential to succeed. Racing is a business, and you need to treat yourself like a product. Enhance your results, polish your attitude, and leverage any unique positioning you have. Focus on these areas to increase your chances of getting noticed by the right people. The journey isn’t just about being fast; it's about playing the game intelligently and strategically, positioning yourself as the driver that teams want to invest in.
